As part of the course I’m taking in Italy, we take part in service learning activities that engage us with the local people and environment. We were split into small groups to visit elementary schools on certain mornings. I do not know the schedule of these schools or exact age of the children, but I was surprised to see the differences from the schools I attended. The entirety of our time at the schools was during the children’s playtime. I did get to join them in card games and celebrating a birthday, however I assumed we would see what their class learning experience was like too. Nevertheless, I was able to converse with some of the children in Italian although the majority of them knew English well enough. We also went to a park in the outskirts of Florence which I found very relaxing. We sanded down some wooden benches and painted them so they would look nice.
